Rodeo Examiner

Hello to all! I just wanted to let you know about a new venture I am beginning. I am working for Examiner.com, doing rodeo coverage for the Las Vegas area and beyond. I would appreciate it if you all would check out the page and spread the word around. My pay is based in part on the traffic the page receives, so it not only helps me out but also, hopefully, can give rodeo some additional exposure. There will be a mix of all types of events and associations, with some focus on the local Las Vegas area. In addition, I am going to do a series called Rodeo 101 to help educate those outside our sport as well so tell non-rodeo friends, too. The page has a place for comments as well and I am looking forward to any suggestions about content—if you have any ideas or know good stories/people to cover, please let me know!

The End of the Year Is Around the Corner

Wow......it's already September and our 2010 year is nearing an end with our finals to be held in November.  As you are all aware of our numbers this year have dropped dramatically.  AWPRA is a non-profit organization and all our money for awards comes from what we make at the barrel races we put on through out the year.  We are significantly behind in funds and would like to see members recruit sponsors or any ideas you may have so we may get nice awards.

This is the 50th year AWPRA has been running, and speaking on behalf of our president Joanie, we would like to see the best awards and banquet ever!

This year has been a difficult and trying year in scheduling arenas, the weather and mostly the economy.

Again, we would appreciate any ideas to generate some sponsors for buckles and saddles.  Girls, put on your thinking caps, pull up your boot straps and  help get us sponsors for our awards.

Please feel to conact Joanie or myself with any questions!

Keep 'em all standing and go fast!!

WILD WEST ARENA (Marana, AZ)

Hello To All,

Its been brought to my attention from several people who heard my arena (Wild West Arena) is closed down. This is not a true statement at all. We do have the facility listed forsale however we have races booked gymkhana's and sorting, we will continue to operate as usual. I have contracts with differant clubs and they will be honored by my self or the new owners should the facility sale.  I will post on my website when the facility sales. I would hope that the new owners would want to keep everyone here and continue to hold races as we have the best ground running to date. Ive gotten nothing but great compliments from many of you about how well you like the ground. Also we have made some changes, we have moved our warm up area to allow for more parking. We are still working on making the warm up area perfect, yes we have some rocks to get out but we work on it everyday!. We are currently booking for 2011, again all booking will be honored. Every race , Every time. Our arena will be worked today tomorrow and months from now just like we currently do. If you have questions please let me know. The saddle series races were canceled because another individual booked on top of mine. I find that to be rude and I wasnt going to try and compete against others. I will never ever schedule a race ontop of others.

NEWS

With the threat of the EVH-1 virus, the AZ barrel racing world has been very quiet.  The AWPRA along with hosting arenas had decided to post pone schedules until it was safe for our equine athletics.  As June 25, the AWPRA will be back in swing hosting the annual Open 4D and WPRA event at the famous Prescott Rodeo Grounds in conjunction with the Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo.  Schedules will be posted on the AWPRA and Classified Horse websites.
At this time due to conflicting schedules the Cottonwood barrel race scheduled for July 2-3 will be postponed until September.  This race will keep the same format and the chapter is hoping to have added sponsor money from area businesses for the October race.
Christian Women’s association will be hosting a barrel race in Williams in July with AWPRA co-approving.  Check out the dates on the website.  Money won and permit points will count for this race.
Reminder chapter members your donation fee is due by June 15th after that date the fees go to $100.  Members paid are provided on the website.
Congratulations to our Jr competitors who competed at the High School Rodeo Finals in Payson this pass weekend.  Jordan McConnell gets high fives she ended up 9th  for the year end in barrels.
On a sad note condolences go out to the Tyree family.  WPRA member Toni Tyree was killed in an all terrain accident on June 11.  Toni was a master roper and made it to the WPRA Women’s Finals several times.  Toni will be dearly missed by all in the rodeo world.
And a word of congratulations to our Turquoise Circuit Director, Sarah Kieckhefer and her husband Rick on the birth of their beautiful daughter Kodi Kieckhefer.
Any female who holds a WPRA permit or card or WPRA Jr permit and is interested in joining one of the last greatest chapters in the United States please go to AWPRA.com or contact Joanie Cowden at (520) 220-1230.

              AWPRA 2011 FINALS & BANQUET

Another year has come to a close for the AWPRA and with that came a successful finals and banquet.  The finals were held at HORSELOVERS PARK on Oct 22, 2011.  With the finals an Open 4D barrel race was held on Oct 22 and 23.  Ross and Kathy Labotti and their crew made everyone feel welcome and worked very hard to make ground conditions good for all competitors.  The chapter would like to thank them for their efforts and hospitality.
With the good ground conditions a fast time run of 16.810 was turned in by veteran AWPRA member Dolli Lautaret and her wonder mare Down Home Daisy.  Dolli and Daisy have been blazing the runs and this was no exception, securing them the 2011 Finals championship.  Results from the finals and the Open 4D checked out on the results link.  AWPRA cameraman Glynn Thrower and his wife Vicki were on hand to take some awesome pictures.  Pictures can be checked out on Glynn’s website: RopesandBarrels.com.
Special thanks to Awards Chairpersons, Ann Marie McConnell and Kim Uldrikson.  Within just a couple of weeks these two ladies secured many donations and awards for the Year End Qualifiers.  Their efforts were outstanding.  The chapter banquet was held at Carlos O’Brien’s and the food was spectacular.
